We have written about how diffusers are an ideal asset for home or office. Depending upon the oil, a diffuser can help purify the air and freshen the space. Certain oils can help promote calming and promoting sleep. Others can help start your day, and some will help ground the mind by reducing feelings of stress and anxious feelings. A grounded mind can have a profound impact on your level of creativity and innovation.
Benefits of a Clean Diffuser
Regardless of the type of diffuser you have, it is important to keep it clean to ensure its longevity. Leaving essential oils or any residual water for a long time can corrode and ruin the unit. Doing so can also negatively affect the aromatic experience when there’s an array of essential oil residue in the diffuser—imagine trying to diffuse Basil after diffusing Spikenard, or Lavender after diffusing Peppermint!
Proper Diffuser Cleaning
To keep your diffuser in perfect running condition for years to come, clean your diffuser after each use. However, it takes more than a quick rinse to clean a diffuser properly.
If you use your diffuser occasionally, simply wipe it out and allow it dry before using it again. If possible, allow to air dry. However, if you use a diffuser throughout the day, wiping it dry will work if you are going to use it again immediately.
Once a week, it’s a good idea to give the diffuser a quick clean by diffusing lemon essential oil for a short time. This will make it easier to clean out any residue or water lines before you wipe it out. For diffusers that do not use water (nebulizing), just rinse out the nozzle with tap water and then wipe it clean.
Deep-Cleaning a Diffuser
If you use a diffuser daily, we recommend you deep clean the diffuser once a month or as needed. Do so by following these steps based on the type of diffuser you have:
How to Deep-Clean an Ultrasonic Diffuser
- Turn off your diffuser.
- Fill the water reservoir halfway to the water line with clean water.
- Add 10 drops of pure white vinegar to the water reservoir.
- Turn it on and let run for 3-5 minutes, allowing the vinegar to disperse throughout.
- Drain the water reservoir completely.
- Dip a cotton swab in white vinegar and wipe down the edges of the water reservoir as well as the ultrasonic mist chip.
- Rinse the water reservoir with clean water.
- Wipe the reservoir with a dry cloth and let air dry before using it again.
If there is stubborn residue that doesn’t come off, saturate the tip of a cotton swab with a few drops of lemon essential oil. Rub the cotton swab over the residue to loosen and remove. Rinse out the diffuser with clean water. Now, fill the reservoir halfway with clean water and add 3 drops of lemon essential oil. Run the diffuser for 5-10 minutes. Empty out the water and rinse with clean water. Finally, wipe the reservoir with a dry cloth and allow the unit to air dry before using again.
How to Deep-Clean a Nebulizing Diffuser
For diffusers that do not use water, do the following:
- Completely submerge the quick-change top in rubbing alcohol for 30–60 minutes.
- Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

By the way, there’s nothing wrong with having a diffuser in different rooms. You can have one in the bedroom for creating a calm atmosphere at bedtime and another in the family room to diffuse your favorite daytime aroma.
