Co-Impact Sourcing in Kenya

Kenya farmers harvesting cropKenya is just one part of the world where amazing plants grow. doTERRA has partnered with local growers in Kenya to help produce quality essential oils such as Pink Pepper, Geranium, Ginger, and Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil). It would be easy to work with commercial growers, but doTERRA has found that working with small-scale farmers is just one way to make a difference and give back in an impactful way

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), agriculture is key to Kenya’s economy, contributing 26 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and another 27 percent of GDP indirectly through linkages with other sectors. Agriculture employs more than more than 70 percent of Kenya’s rural people. Overall, agriculture employs over 40 percent of the total population.

The dynamics of poverty within Kenya are changing and directly influence the country’s agricultural sector. The FAO estimates 46 percent of the population live on less than one US dollar a day, 36.5 percent are food insecure, and 35 percent of children under five are chronically malnourished in Kenya.

Since launching operations in rural Kenya in 2016 doTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing® initiative has partnered with small farmers in southern Kenya to create hundreds of jobs. The program is expected to create over 5,000 rural farming jobs by 2020.

In addition to supplying the highest quality essential oils doTERRA® is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters, and distillers who contribute to doTERRA’s oil production.

Co-Impact Sourcing in Kenya

Kenya flagCo-Impact Sourcing is a doTERRA initiative that seeks to develop long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships in underdeveloped areas. The program works to create sustainable jobs and providing reliable income to their suppliers. doTERRA is committed to the ethical treatment of its suppliers by providing on-time payments at fair prices.

Co-Impact Sourcing encourages growers and harvesters to form cooperative groups to share collective benefits and bargaining power while improving skills and capacity. Through a strategic partnership with Fairoils, an expert organization in farming and essential oil production, doTERRA has helped form cooperative farming groups within various communities across Kenya for the production of CPTG essential oils.

Two Co-Impact Sourcing initiatives in Kenya are:

  • Lunga Lunga Project – A 300-acre model farm, distillation facility and a small-scale farming cooperative producing essential oil crops. This project works directly with the local community to grow tropical aromatic plants with the goal of including up to 2,500 farmers in this area by 2020.
  • Mount Kenya Project – A small-scale farming cooperative of initially 250 smallholder farmers, training center, and distillation facility. doTERRA plans to expand this group to over 2,500 farmers by 2020.

Healing Hands Foundation Work in Kenya

Additionally, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation has provided funding and resources to complete nine community projects to benefit the health and well-being of thousands of Kenyans. The following community projects in Kenya have been funded through donations from the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation:

  • Construction of a new community center, kindergarten, community water tower, and river bridge.
  • Improvements to two primary schools.
  • Creation of a water maintenance trust fund.
  • Indigenous culture and health training for over 2,000 school-aged children.
  • Education and reforestation of indigenous trees.

In addition to the Healing Hands Foundation donations, doTERRA has established a Community Development Fund in Kenya. For every kilogram of essential oil produced by its farmer cooperatives, a portion of that revenue is set aside in a fund overseen by the cooperatives themselves to finance larger development projects at their discretion.

doTERRA continues to grow its global supply chain now consists of more than 40 countries. In each, doTERRA is working to improve the quality of life and bring ethically responsible employment in essential oil production to low-income communities.
