Spring is the perfect time for do-it-yourself (DIY) cleaning projects. However, the standard way of cleaning your home has a rather murky health record. Today’s modern cleaning products come with a promise of cleaning pretty much everything. But what’s in those cleaners? The majority of cleaning products available today contain hazardous materials. Many are right on the label, and this is why more and more people are opting for DIY cleaning recipes.
In addition to hazardous materials, many store-bought cleaning products can also pollute the indoor air. These materials can create an indoor air quality that is worse than the air over a modern city! It’s not just our lungs at risk, either. The antibacterial chemicals found in soaps and sprays can actually encourage certain pathogens to grow in our nasal passages according to a study published in the journal mBio.
